How to Choose Flooring for Your Home

Most homeowners don't struggle with flooring decisions because there aren't enough options — they struggle because there are too many. Here's the simple framework we walk customers through during every shop-at-home visit, so the decision feels manageable instead of overwhelming.

Start with the room, not the product

Before comparing brands or colors, answer this for each space: how much moisture, traffic, and wear will this room realistically see? A guest bedroom and a mudroom have almost nothing in common, and they shouldn't be flooring twins.

  • Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms: waterproof flooring only — LVP is the standard choice
  • High-traffic living areas: LVP or hardwood, depending on budget and whether pets are involved
  • Bedrooms: carpet for comfort, or LVP/hardwood for a more unified look with the rest of the home
  • Basements: waterproof flooring, given moisture risk from concrete slabs

Then factor in your household

Pets, kids, allergies, and how long you plan to stay in the home all shift the right answer. A household with large dogs should weight durability and waterproofing more heavily than a household of empty-nesters, even in the exact same room.

Then, and only then, talk style

Once you know the right category of flooring for each space, narrowing down color and finish is the easy part — and it's much easier to do with real samples in your own lighting rather than under a showroom's fluorescent lights.

Set a realistic budget range

Material costs vary widely by category:

  • Laminate: $2.50 – $3.25 / sq ft
  • Luxury Vinyl Plank: $1.79 – $2.89 / sq ft
  • Engineered Wood: $3.89 – $4.59 / sq ft
  • Hardwood: $5.99 – $8.99 / sq ft
  • Carpet: $8.99 – $14.99 / sq yard

These are material prices — your exact cost depends on room size, subfloor condition, and installation, which is why we always finish with an in-home estimate rather than a phone-quoted number.

Let us bring the decision to you

This is exactly why we built our shop-at-home process the way we did: we bring real samples of the flooring types that make sense for your rooms, so you're comparing actual material in your actual light — not guessing from a website photo.
