You just had your hardwood floors refinished, and they look incredible — rich color, even sheen, not a scratch in sight. (Haven't made the leap yet? Our hardwood refinishing service page covers what's included and what it costs.) The question we get almost as often as "how much does refinishing cost" is "how do I keep them looking like this?" The good news: a fresh finish is durable, but the first few weeks matter, and a few small habits afterward make the difference between a finish that looks great for years and one that starts showing wear in two.
The First 2–4 Weeks: Let the Finish Cure
Your floors are walkable again within a day or so of the final coat, but the finish keeps hardening underneath for several weeks after that. Treat this window carefully:
- Stick to socks or soft-soled shoes — no heels, work boots, or cleats on the new finish
- Hold off on putting rugs or furniture back for at least 24–48 hours, longer if we recommend it at your walkthrough
- Skip wet mopping entirely; a dry dust mop is all the floor needs during this period
- If you booked our furniture-moving add-on, we'll place felt pads under everything before we set it back down — if you're moving it yourself, do the same
Rushing this stage is the most common way a brand-new finish gets dented or clouded before it's even had a chance to fully cure.
Your Everyday Cleaning Routine
Once the floor is fully cured, upkeep is simple:
- Dust mop or use a microfiber mop a few times a week to keep grit from scratching the surface underfoot
- Vacuum with the hard-floor or bare-floor setting — not the beater-bar/rotating-brush setting made for carpet
- Damp-mop, never wet-mop, with a cleaner made for polyurethane-finished hardwood
- Wipe up spills right away, especially in the kitchen
Skip ammonia-based cleaners, vinegar-and-water mixes, and oil soaps or wax polishes — all of them are popular "natural" cleaning tips online, and all of them will dull or cloud a modern polyurethane finish over time. If you're not sure what's safe, ask us at your next visit; we're happy to point you to a product that works with the finish we used on your floor.
Protecting the Finish Long-Term
- Felt pads under every furniture leg, and fresh ones once they wear flat
- Area rugs with a felt or breathable backing — vinyl and rubber-backed rugs can trap moisture against the finish and cause discoloration
- Keep pets' nails trimmed; claws are one of the most common causes of surface scratching on refinished floors
- Use blinds or curtains on south- and west-facing windows to limit direct sun, which fades wood unevenly over time
Humidity matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. Coastal Georgia's swings between humid summers and drier winters can make boards expand and contract, which stresses the finish at the seams. Keeping indoor humidity in the 35–55% range — with your AC in summer and a humidifier if your home runs dry in winter — goes a long way toward keeping a refinished floor flat, tight, and crack-free. We cover this in more depth in our guide to how coastal Georgia's humidity affects your flooring.

When to Call for a Fresh Coat
A well-maintained finish on solid hardwood can last close to a decade before it needs attention again. Watch for these signs that it's time:
- The sheen looks duller or patchier in high-traffic paths, like hallways or in front of the sink
- Water no longer beads up on the surface and instead soaks in
- Light surface scratches are starting to show, but the wood underneath still looks healthy
Catching it at this stage usually means a simpler job than waiting until the finish wears through to bare wood in spots — at that point, you're back to a full sand rather than a lighter touch-up. Either way, we'll tell you honestly what your floors need at a free in-home estimate rather than upselling a bigger job than necessary.
Our Take
A refinished floor is one of the best-value upgrades a homeowner can make, but it's also an investment worth protecting. A little care in the first month, a sensible cleaning routine after that, and keeping an eye on humidity will keep your floors looking like the day we finished them for years longer.
